Are you considering SIP trunking for your RightFax solution? Not sure whether or not the solution is right for your organization? Here are a few common questions people have about SIP trunking that can help you decide if it’s necessary for your fax solution.
What is SIP Trunking?
Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) trunking is a method that allows an organization’s existing phone systems to operate using an internet connection instead of a phone line. This allows for real-time faxing over an IP network. SIP trunking is offered by many companies, so please check with your account manager to see if SIP trunking from your carrier is supported by RightFax.
Is SIP Trunking Compatible with RightFax?
Yes, The Fax Guys and RightFax support SIP trunking. Organizations that choose SIP trunking for fax and FoIP can deploy RightFax without in-house fax boards, fax gateways, or switched telephone network (PSTN) lines. Keep in mind that SIP trunking may (or may not) be the best solution for your company. Please check with a member of our team to see if it’s right for your business.
Is SIP Trunking Secure?
Although faxing is usually very secure, using SIP trunks when faxing is even more secure than using public switched telephone lines (PSTN) because they can be encrypted. Sending a fax using SIP trunks uses T.38, which is a protocol that implements T.30 for IP-based networks. IP traffic, unlike telephone traffic, can be encrypted, which adds another level of security.
Even without it’s encryption capabilities, faxing over IP is just as secure as faxing over PSTN.
Does SIP Trunking Meet HIPAA Requirements?
Because T.38 real-time FoIP is considered a conduit and is generally just as secure as using faxing without SIP trunking, it meets the requirement outlined by the HIPAA Privacy Rule.
What is T.38 Real Time Fax?
T.38 (fax over internet protocol) uses the Internet as a conduit to create a direct connection between the sending and receiving fax server or devices that is similar to the connection made by PSTN lines (in T.30 fax). Real-time fax eliminates the “middle man” in faxing and allows the sender and receiver of faxes to know and agree on the delivery time of a fax.
